Prominent Nigerian activist and political figure, Aisha Yesufu, has formally resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and announced her defection to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), where she will contest for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Senatorial seat.
In a statement made public on Wednesday, Yesufu said her decision was driven by her continued support for Peter Obi, whom she described as embodying “the hope and aspiration of a Nigeria that works.”
According to her, “the next couple of days will define the future of this nation,” emphasizing that her political moves are guided by a deeper conviction about Nigeria’s direction.
Yesufu noted that her initial support for Obi had earlier led her to the ADC, but maintaining that commitment has now necessitated her move to the NDC. She stressed that her decision reflects her principle of honoring her word.
“This time, I am joining the NDC not just as a member but as one running for the FCT Senatorial seat,” she stated.
The activist also confirmed that she concluded all responsibilities within the ADC before her departure, describing her exit as a “clean transition.” She expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve in various leadership roles within the party, including as sub-committee chair, deputy committee chair, and secretary.
Yesufu praised her former colleagues in the ADC, describing them as “great and amazing people whose goal was a better country,” while appreciating their support and cooperation during her time in the party.
Her move adds a new dimension to the evolving political landscape ahead of upcoming electoral contests, particularly in the FCT, where her candidacy is expected to generate significant public interest.
