The Nigerian Senate has resolved to constitute a joint ad hoc committee in collaboration with the House of Representatives to address the growing concerns over xenophobic attacks against Nigerians residing in South Africa.
The decision followed deliberations among lawmakers over the recurring incidents, which have raised national and international alarm. The attacks, often targeting foreign nationals including Nigerians, have resulted in loss of lives, destruction of businesses, and heightened diplomatic tensions between both countries.
According to the resolution, the committee will be jointly formed by members of both chambers of the National Assembly and will be led by the Chairman of the National Assembly. The Senate further reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to peaceful coexistence across Africa and stressed the need for stronger regional cooperation to combat xenophobia and promote mutual respect among African nations.
